The "Red Flag" Law

In the wake of the California shooting massacre, one of the things that came out was that California has a "Red Flag Law" in effect.

As described in Wikipedia,
"..California was the first state to pass a red flag law law allowing family members to petition courts to take weapons from persons deemed a threat. The California law also permits law enforcement officials to petition for an order for the removal of such weapons..."

Although the Red Flag Law was never implemented in the shooter's case, he was interviewed by a prison psychologist about six months ago, when the police were investigating a reported disturbance at his household. At that time, it, was determined that he was not considered to be a sufficient danger to himself or others so as to take further action against him.

To me, this is an example of the difficulties associated with the cutting down on gun violence in our country.
Another example is the fact that the shooter was operating with an illegally acquired gun barrel (capable of carrying a high number of cartridges) for his legally purchased 45 pistol.

As has been previously pointed out, it looks like it would be relatively easy for a would-be shooter to illegally acquire an assault-type weapon.

I guess the answer still has to be that we have to start somewhere; e.g., by both implementing more Red flag-type laws and by banning the sale of assault-type weapons.

With regard to the former, the Democrats here in Colorado say they will try again to pass a red flag law , now that they have gained control of both houses of the state legislature. (It was tried last year, but the Republican-controlled Senate shot it down).
