EVREN

Tarek was not the only one awake. Evren could not remember the last time she had had a full night’s sleep, but it was certainly not since Persphone was taken by Warsaw all those months ago. Something had shifted in Evren since that happened, especially now that Han had left. She and her son had only been parted twice in their lives, and with him now gone indefinitely, she felt as though she’d had a limb ripped off.

First her mother and unborn sister… then her father, then her brother, then her older sister, then Evren’s own unborn foal. And now Han. It seemed that Evren was doomed to be parted from every single one of her family members. Even Hannah, who was - by extension - family, too, being the mother of Evren’s grand-nephew. In terms of blood relations, all Evren had left was Tarek, which made him all the more precious in her mind.

As she often did when she could not sleep, Evren decided to take a stroll, hoping the exercise and cool and quiet of the night would soothe her frayed mind. She had not gone far, however, when she heard the sound of horse-sized rustling through the trees. Pricking her ears, Evren approached cautiously, until she caught sight of the dark silhouette pacing beneath dapples of moonlight. At first, Evren’s heart lifted, for she had not seen her nephew since Hannah and her young foal had gone missing. Evren had assumed he had left to bring her back. Yet, here he was… pacing, looking ragged and unsettled. That could not be good.

Evren nickered softly as she emerged from the trees. “Tarek,” she said softly, her voice croaky with fatigue. “Tell me what happened.”
