bring me back to life...

After their last conversation, she wondered if she'd left Requiem in a bad place. He just seemed a little stressed with the new things going on in the Inlet and since she didn't know many horses at all on the islands, she wanted to be a friend to him, at least as much as she could without having to get close to him or touch him. That was still a sore spot for her instincts. She'd searched the Inlet a little, exploring the outskirts and avoiding most the other horses. They seemed okay with ignoring her for the most part. They looked to be almost on a mission, most of them meeting up where the bloodied stallion and mare were. Snorting softly, she wandered until she came across a mare that smelled of Requiem. Figuring this must be his other mare, Nampeyo, she'd decided to graze a few feet away, eying the other mare out of the corner of her eye till she worked up the courage to say hello.

She was just about to find the words when she heard Requiem's nicker. Almost grateful for the distaction from her own nerves, she looked over at him and forced herself to hold her ground as he got closer. He wasn't one to crowd her or anything but her instincts still screamed at her to run. Still, her whole body tensed up and braced as if for attack, even though she knew he wouldn't do anything like that. Her ears pricked when he spoke, saying that the lead stallion lost the Inlet to a mare. Evanescence only blinked since she didn't know this Warsaw anyway to have an opinion on his leadership and she certainly didn't know the mare who was taking over. The next part was more important to her. Requiem wasn't planning on leaving. At least she would get more time to explore and get comfortable here.

As he turned his gaze to the other mare, Evanscence listened quietly. It seemed she had goals to be a lead mare. Evanescence swallowed. Just thinking about that much responsibility and amount of attention stressed her out. She liked that he offered the other mare freedom to leave if she wanted it since he couldn't give her the leadership role she wanted. He only asked to be a part of the unborn foal's life. When he turned his gaze on her, she stiffened a bit more, her ears flicking back and forth uncertainly as she wondered what he needed to say to her. Then he said that he needed to repeat himself and asked if she wanted to live here with him. She swished her tail and glanced at the other mare before looking back at Requiem and clearing her throat. Even with just one other horse present, she already felt too exposed. It made it harder for her to find her voice.

"I...I still want to stay with you." Her words ended on a whisper, barely loud enough to hear, even as she ducked her head as if in embarassment. She kept glancing at the other mare, studying her unique pattern of spots. She could tell by the way the mare held herself that she was much more confident. She probably didn't have a stallion abusing her the first 3 years of her life, though. The other mare was mostly silent, listening as Requiem spoke, but Evanscence caught the challenge in her posture and side stepped a little to put some distance between them. The last thing she wanted was another mare thinking she needed to take a bite out of her just for looking at her the wrong way. She already had enough scars on her skin without adding more. Finally the mare spoke, telling him that his father was probably not a worthy stallion before saying that she would stay as long as his mares understood her rank.

Even as the other mare gave her a look, Evanescence snorted and lowered her head, taking another side step away from her to put even more distance between them. So much for making friends. She'd have to find someone a bit less pushy to talk to if she wanted to work around her own mental triggers. With this mare, she couldn't decipher what would provoke her and she wasn't about to find out.
