bring me back to life...

She knew his words made sense. She couldn't help but smile a little when he said it, a soft sigh leaving her lips as she nodded in agreement. "Yes, probably so." He seemed to understand what she meant about all the tension in the Inlet, nodding his head before he flared his nostrils and abruptly turned away. Her own ears flicked back in confusion at first before it dawned on her. It was breeding season and since she hadn't let either Ruger or Requiem cover her, she still had a strong scent. It was probably torturing both stallions now that she thought about it. Shame clouded her features as she again looked at the ground. She thought Ruger might leave now it was painful for him to be around her, but he surprised her by holding his ground. He still turned from her, seemingly watching the waterfall, but he hadn't left.

She felt hope rise in her chest. When he did turn back toward her, she noted that he didn't look at her. Instead, he looked at the pool of water near the base of the falls. When he next spoke, her body froze, but in an attentive way now instead of scared. Her ears pricked forward and she even leaned a little toward him, straining to catch every word. She remembered that he'd mistaken her for someone else that first night they met. He had called her by a different name. He said it now and said that she was a blue roan like Evanescence. He said that she brought him light when he was in a dark place. Evanescence couldn't help but smile. Sounds like he was in love. He said that they had a daughter and her lips parted in a silent gasp. She was happy for him...up until he said that his father destroyed his happiness.

A shiver of dread ran down her spine. She could only imagine what that meant, what his father had done. It seemed he had neither Zimri nor his daughter now to give him happy thoughts so they were either dead or gone. Her heart ached for him in that moment, her tail swishing at her flanks as she slowly closed her mouth. He said then that he never intended to hurt her and that he understood how the past could linger. She frowned but nodded her head in slow agreement. Letting out a slow breath, she took one step toward him, then another. She stopped beside him, the closest she'd been to a stallion by choice since the one who forced himself there. She looked into the pool of water, meeting his reflection's gaze as she lowered her head.

"His name was V...Valour." She had to take a breath. It had been so long since she'd said the name that it seemed to take all the air from her lungs just to say it out loud. Once she composed herself, she continued. "We met as foals and became best friends. He said even then that I would be his mate some day, his queen. I was proud to be such then, naive and happy. I liked to trot around with my tail up in the air, pretending we were already running our own herd." She smiled softly as the memories flooded back to her, but she shook her head gently and sighed before continuing, her face sober. "When he turned a year old, he was sent to a bachelor herd by his father for training. He promised to come back to me and said that when he did, we would create our own herd and live happily ever after. I believed every word he said."

"Only, when he came back a year later, he was changed. While I had spent the year pining for him and waiting breathlessly for the day he would return to sweep me off my hooves, he'd spent the year learning how to fight and raid herds and breed mares. He found that he liked to force the mares to do things, that the smell of their fear excited him." A shiver ran down her spine at the cold empty look she remembered in his eyes. "He came back for me, but he didn't need a queen anymore. He only wanted what he felt belonged to him, already. When my father saw he had changed, he refused to give me up and they fought. Valour beat my father to within an inch of his life. There was no mercy in him, that day, or any day after. Even when my father could no longer stand to fight, Valour kept trampling and biting him, yelling at him to get back up. It was a day I'll never forget." A single tear swept down her cheek.

"After that, he chased me and the rest of the mares away so that no one could help my father. He left him for dead, and that's probably exactly what happened. It was the last time I ever saw him. After that, Valour let the mares in my herd know just who and what he was, now. He force bred as many as possible, myself included. When I tried to argue and fight back, he beat me and laughed the whole time, like he was enjoying himself. After a while, I found out that cooperation and silence meant he would do what he wanted then leave me alone. If I fought, he would continue to attack me until I gave in. I carried his foal but a month before it was to be born, he got angry because a stallion had raided one of the mares. He came to me, looking to hurt someone in return. When I gave birth to a stillborn, he blamed me and attacked me again. It wasn't long after that, I escaped in the night and swam until I reached the islands."

She closed her eyes for a second, letting the tears wash down her cheeks silently as she cleared her thoughts of that horrible time in her life. Finally, she cleared her throat and re-opened her eyes, slowly lifting her head to look at the stallion standing next to her. "I know you meant no harm. It was just reflex. The fear has controlled me for a long time, now. I don't want it to control me anymore." She met his gaze and for once, a fire started to glow in her eyes again, the embers of the mare she used to be.
