EVREN

It took Evren a few moments to register that she had just heard her own name from the stranger�s mouth. During that time, she stood there staring blankly back at the other mare, her brief smile of relief that the mare was all right fading quickly from her lips. Evren�s memories of Scylla were faint, given they had only met once so long ago - and it did not help that Evren had suppressed many of the memories from her early life in the desert, given how quickly it had all gone sour. Neither did it help that, in the dusky half-light, the mare could pass for just about anyone.

Evren racked her brain for the horses she knew that were black and white in color. There was her mother, of course� but Evren had accepted a long time ago that her mother was gone for good. But who else�?

Then it hit her. Evren remembered that time in the desert when a black-and-white mare had arrived looking for Orhan. They had quarreled, that much Evren remembered, but for the life of her she could not remember why. Nor could she remember the mare�s name.

Nonetheless, the memory was enough to light up her face with understanding. �Oh! Oh, it�s - it�s you!� she said, her eyes wide and her mouth hanging open. The mare�s name was on the tip of her tongue, but for the life of her, it would not come. Her cheeks burned with a mixture of surprise and embarrassment. �I�m so sorry, but I don�t remember your name. But damn it all if I don�t remember you. How are you? Other than bruised?�

Evren�s sheepish expression cracked into one of good humor, and she watched the mare�s face carefully to see how she would respond. There was no hostility in her this time, but with the current atmosphere on the islands, Evren was becoming less and less confident of her ability to judge another�s intentions.
