This is no ordinary love [ALL>]

She won.

Her nostrils flared in a staccato-like rhythm in an attempt to satisfy her scorched lungs. But she felt alive and invigorated. Vita Nova was the proudest she's ever been. She issued a shrill call for what remained of the Inlet herd, including the fallen Xiomara and her former king, Warsaw. Things were able to change. She was in charge now.

But her brilliant blue eyes searched the landscape for her sons. She so desperately needed to see them now, to envelop them, and to tell them mommy made everything better. Because it was true. She couldn't count on Warsaw, after all. When a threat came knocking at their doorstep, the great grey stallion bowed down to her, and cast Vita Nova aside. The sooty-colored mare was about to make damn sure that wouldn't happen again. She was the Queen.

The mare's breathing was finally beginning to even out, and just in time, as the herd came to her call. The side of her barrel throbbed in pain still, where Xiomara landed a formative blow. A pink blemish marked where the mare's hoof scraped down her side, and a hematoma swelled to the size of an orange where she'd made definite impact. Vita Nova could feel that her body was in stress, and her heart fluttered briefly with worry for the foal growing inside of her. But she didn't have time to think about what risk she'd assumed now. There was too much to do. So much to put back together.

Her sweet Letavice was the first to reach her. His ghostly expression was filled with concern, but Vita Nova nickered to him warmly, begging him to come over. He trotted over quickly and pressed himself into his dam's side. Vita Nova rested her muzzle at his withers, breathing him in, exhaustion finally hitting her like a ton of bricks.
