The spotted mare winces, as she lifts her head from the bank of the creek after drinking her fill. Something in her abdomen twists and tightens, and that growing familiar pain shoots through her body. Letavice hovers nearby and nickers worriedly to his mother. He nips at his brother, Ironclad, to alert him that something in wrong. But Vita Nova suffers silently, breathing in deeply and exhaling slowly, until the pain passes. The creek is cold, as the melting snow at the end of winter fuels it and rises the water table level. Vita Nova realizes she's more than half-way through her pregnancy, but thinking about the weeks she still has ahead causes her mind to fill with worry.
She stands silently at the creek's edge, her hooves sinking into the moist mud that makes up the outerbank, until she hears a twig snap in the distance, and then another one. One ashen ear lobe flicks back at the sound, and she cocks her dished face to one side. There her brilliant blue eyes catch the sight of Warsaw coming toward them through the trees.
Letavice whinnies happily to his father, but doesn't move from his mother's side. Instead his eyes shift from his dad to his mom, and occasionally to his brother, as a tense silence hands between all of them.
Finally, Vita Nova breaks the silence. "Go play, boys. But don't go too far." She says with the flick of her tail.
She waits until the colts trek into the trees before setting her sights back on Warsaw. Her head his held proudly, high over her withers, and she stares confidently down her nose at the great grey stallion. She doesn't move from her position at the bank of the creek, but waits to see if and when Warsaw will approach. If he has something to say to his Queen, now is certainly the time.
