2nd Marine Division has had a BLT ( Battalion Landing Team) (now callled a MEU ) in the Med on Amphibs w/support elements since 1948 for contingency purposes so this not anything new. The MEU usually make operational training landing with other Nation units and keep their skills honed and ready to protect US Interests.
