He remembers being told tales about blood being a bond that forever tied souls together. Rituals and rites performed under the moonlight that knotted the flesh together and songs that were sung under the veil of night. That was a long time ago. Sometimes he dreams about them, imagining painted bodies that twist and turn and dance around sacrifices and offerings, guttural voices screaming up to the sky, filled with prayers and questions.
None of that bothered him anymore. Sleep, once hard to come by and leaving him weak and slow, no longer evaded him and life was easier.
Perhaps it was simply because of perspective, but it was certainly easier.
He cared only for the hunger in his belly and the thirst at his lips, and he looked as a beast reborn from the flames. Kissed by the sun and only a little tainted by the winter, once more he stands at the shores of this strangely familiar place. Blinking, he thinks that he ought to do more than simply stand around. There is nothing to drive him, for his hunger is satiated and his skin had dried under the weak warmth of the winter sun long ago. So he wanders, accompanied only by the sound of the snow crunching under his feet.
His pace is slow, and there is still a sort of robust roundness to his hips and his belly. Health, it seems, had been kind to him. He is refreshed and unscarred, cleansed by the salt waters that border every inch of the lands here. Still, he feels as though something is missing, and as the cool winter wind picks up, drifting through the naked trees with a subtle howl and brushing aside the air-dried snow, he begins to remember a little bit more.
