EMBER

She still felt as though she could breathe better. These islands had soothed a part of her being that seemed to never have been at peace before. She could look up at the skies and feel as though for the first time the stars smiled down at her instead of staring expectantly. Still, she knew something more was off. At least today.

Ember watched through her dark mane as the night skies moved above her. Here on the top of the falls was the most beautiful place to observe the world around her. Between worlds and still connected, she could breathe in the soft mists from the falls. Each droplet lingered on her whiskered lips. As she inhaled the sweet scent, her eyes half closed, feeling the rush of water beside her. Wind played with her dark hair and whispered in her ears, there was something else for her to see here.

Opening her eyes again from her serene meditation, she turned and picked her way down from the peak of the falls. The brisk spring air coupled with the roar of the water invigorated her. She knew this was how the world around her worked, it was the most beautiful magic she could imagine. Water and air embraced each other, wrapped in the earth’s embrace. All that was missing was...fire. She grinned to herself as she trotted along the lush banks of the river, knowing the truth. Dark hair from her hooves and neck danced against her burnt body, the pulse of her heart beat in her chest - she was the fire this night. Lifting her forehooves along with her voice, she pawed out into the air of the night. Once she landed again, she took off and let her body and spirit race with the water.

As dawn broke over the horizon she slowed her pace and came to a stop back in the same place she had started. The sun brought light to the falls, sparking the mists into dazzling rainbows. Once more her eyes half-lidded as her sides heaved from her exertion. In this moment and in this time, in this place, she was where she needed to be.
