He'd never felt so lonely, even in those four years of imprisonment in a dirt pen. Even when he was only met with whips and ropes, at least he had companionship. The two legged humans were cruel but they didn't leave him. Not like everyone else was seeming to. Cain knew there was hope. Deep down somewhere, he knew he was slowly accomplishing what he set out to do by inviting Melisma, Mazarine, Nasa, and Cerosi to the Desert. Though none of them had said they would stay for good, yet, there was still hope. Meanwhile the herd he'd spent so much time cultivating and growing attached to was disappearing bit by bitter bit. Primrose lost in battle and when she recieved her freedom, couldn't even look at him to tell him she might not come back. Vihaan had been gone months without a word and though she'd promised to return to him, he was beginning to feel that darkness creeping in. What if she didn't come back this time?

Zubeia killed by wolves and then days later, Geneva succumbed to her own wounds and the newborn filly, Zena, along with her. He was tired of digging holes in the Desert. He was tired of digging graves. All he had left of them was Carbon, his recent son with Geneva. Still fresh to the world, the black colt required milk that Cain couldn't give and he was losing hope the foal would survive much longer. He was growing weaker and there was nothing the tobiano could do about it. His yearling son, Legolas, had taken off in his grief over losing his mother so now the only blood he had left was Carbon and Akello. His heart had never felt so empty. When Carbon lied down for a nap, exhausted and depleted from watching Cain dig the holes to bury his half sister and mother, Cain asked Akello to watch over him so he could get away for a moment.

In a way, he felt guilty for even doing that. Maybe he didn't deserve a break. This was his punishment, after all. He was beginning to feel sure of that. This was what he got for being such an asshole when he first came here. This is what he got for his crimes against Primrose, Vihaan, and Everglow. He would watch his small but strong herd disappear or die one by one and be helpless to stop it. He would lose everything he'd worked for. He would be nothing. As he pulled himself from the water and onto the banks of the Meadow, he didn't even pause to shake out his coat. He just took off. He was tired from the swim, but the wind was calling him something fierce so he took out all his grief and anger on the ground, pounding his big hooves into the lush grass as he launched ahead as fast as he could possibly go. His ears flattened to his skull, all but disappearing in his tangled mane as he gritted his teeth and pushed forward, hoping the ground would swallow him up whole if only to stop the pain.
