Time away from Salem was somehow easier for the Vanner stallion so he found himself once more swimming for the mainland. The sands of the desert were still fresh with the grief of the fallen and he couldn't be there without thinking of those graves and the innocent souls that lie beneath them. What's more, his son Carbon wasn't doing well. He was growing weaker and Cain had no milk to offer. He was at a loss. The colt was too weak to play and spent most of his time sleeping in the shade of the trees. Most of the time, Akello appointed himself the colt's babysitter and watched over his little half brother so Cain could go off and prepare himself for the future. He was starting to lose hope that he would find a mare willing to take Carbon under her wing and nurse him back to health. He was starting to prepare himself mentally for digging another grave.

He'd beat himself up on a daily basis since the deaths of Zubeia, Geneva, and Zena. He didn't know how he could even begin to forgive himself. After all, the wolves had gotten on the island under his watch and now his son was without a mother. To make matters worse, Primrose had come by only to tell him she wasn't coming back to the desert, at least not for now and he knew better than to hope she'd change her mind later. Then Vihaan had returned to him only to treat him like a stranger. He'd felt the distance between them like a great ocean that he could never hope to swim and it killed him to think he'd lost her forever, too. The burden was wearing him down and he didn't know how to stop it. He didn't know how to continue being the lead stallion he'd set out to be so long ago. He didn't know how to be worthy anymore. He was a shell of a horse and saving his son had become his last try for redemption.

He hadn't expected to come across a foal, of all things. And yet he paused in his trot toward the falls to watch the dark colt who played and danced across the ground like he didn't have a care in the world. Sadness gripped Cain's heart tightly, thinking how Carbon should be doing the same and yet he barely had the strength to stand. He had lost weight since his birth and was dwindling away before Cain's eyes and he felt helpless to stop it. He almost thought taking the colt out of his misery himself as a mercy but couldn't bring himself to do it. So instead he felt he had set the colt up to starve to death slowly and painfully and that killed him all the more inside. He was lost in his day dreams and nightmares of the future when he heard the voice calling out. His head snapped around, dark eyes taking in the sooty colored mare as she trotted toward her son, her gaze falling on him warily and the intent was clear.

She was going to protect her son at all costs. Giving his tail a gentle swish, he lowered his head and pricked his ears, offering a soft whicker of greeting. "I meant no harm toward your son. My name is Cain. It's refreshing to watch a colt so full of life and I was caught up in the moment. I apologize for my intrusion." He dipped his head politely, his gaze watching hers for a reaction.
