WISE MEN WONDER

• strong men die •

Cerosi liked the excitement in Akello’s eyes as he offered to show her around, and found herself feeling almost childish in a pleasant way. She had never played or explored as a foal, so it was a very new feeling for her, and she enjoyed the giddiness she experienced at the thought of being shown around by a younger horse. She smiled at the yearling, and followed after him through the sand, her stride airy and light.

”Were you born here?” she asked as their hooves kicked up little clouds of sand. Akello let her stop at another water source, and she drank gratefully. Her cool facade was seeming to fade, revealing a very young personality beneath. Cerosi felt like she had a lot to make up for, having missed her childhood, and was only just realizing it. She hoped the Desert was a good place for to do so; it felt safe here, and Cain had given her no reason to mistrust him, despite his past. She thought the fact that he had been so open about it was actually a good sign. She felt he had acknowledged her right to make an informed decision, and she appreciated him for that. Her gold eyes swept over Akello, noting the similarities between him and his father. From their brief interaction, it seemed Cain had raised him well, though where Cain was calm and stoic, Akello was energetic and playful.

When she had drunk her fill, they continued, and Cerosi realized that the shadow she had seen earlier was a cave, as she thought. Her ears pointed forward with curiosity as they approached the mouth of the cave, where cool air rolled slowly out to kiss the tip of her nose. She shot a glance toward Akello before venturing forward. She had never been inside a cave before! It was exciting, but a little scary, being below the earth she usually walked on. She enjoyed the echoing sounds of her own hooves and the chilly air that coiled in the shade, but she was also still very eager to keep exploring. She trotted back out again to the painted yearling, giving a little crow hop as her hooves touched the sand again. ”I’m ready to see the rest,” she said decisively. ”Thank you so much for showing me around.”
