Liberals and the Second Amendment

Was listening to Biden the other day going on about aasault rifles after the latest shooting of police officers. He and all the anti-gun crowd want to get rid of assault weapons and large cllips. That's always been strange to me, because the dependent clause of the 2nd Amendment implies that is the type of arms they had in mind when they wrote it. That dependent clause--"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a State,..." indicates that the citizens' right to bear arms meant military arms. Am I wrong? Or maybe Biden and the Dims haven't thought it through.
