Charlie & Others: I too had to memorize the 11 General Orders. They were all clear, uncompromising, and absolutely understandable by the simplest sentry. They have since been condensed to the point of incomprehensibility, and are so vague as to allow anyone to escape a charge of dereliction of duty.
PS, I wonder what the reaction would be if a sizable number of Guardsmen on duty in DC were to sign a manifesto, "There's no longer any point in keeping us here, let us go home."
