There were some things that never seemed to make sense to Bane. Dreams that she would have over and over… the visitors she’d have in her dreams. She could see them as far off shadows, dancing just out of view. Blurry at a distance. They were hard to understand, especially from where she stood. From where she seemed to exist. A reality that Bane was maybe not quite in touch with-- one that ran parallel to her own.

Maybe one of those was a reality in which she had a relationship with her father. Thane’s image echoed about in her head, and she couldn’t really tell you why. He had never held a particular importance. No, he was only the head of the Lagoon. Her mother, the Peak’s general. Maybe that was why Anath, upon her return, had acted like a stranger. The General and the Boss, bearing a girl that would grow to be Code Breaker. Not that it had been confirmed-- not yet. Maybe it was the fear that she had disappointed the memory of both parents, not just one.

But another dream, one that was far more interesting had been visiting. Had been haunting. It was one of a place far off… far off. Bane didn’t know that her only daughter had fled to the Cove. No. Her dreams of the Inlet were something else entirely. Another possibility, another thought, another dream. Another life. Another life that she would have lived out there, though she couldn’t think of why.

In a dream, she had been here. On an autumn day that was not unlike this one, she had taken the same path across the shores of the Inlet. Barely more than a girl then, but also something far more. This was not the first time that Bane had been here, though it’s the first time she has reasonable recollection of. The day was young, but Bane felt very old as she shook the sea from her coat.
