Re(16): Lead, follow, or Get out of the Way

Twenty minutes to read my diatribe? I'm surprised you can even spell it. Anybody noticce he brags about his 40 plus years of sobriety in every post? AA people are very big on their longeivity scorecads. They got congratulatory coins to hand out for getting thru the night, a week, a month, a year, etc etc. Ya'd get the idea that those with addictive personalities have to hold on pretty tight. I'm fairly sure I have one of those too... Took me a big fight to quit smoking... once I was on a roadtrip from doodah to KC with a coworker headed for a big interview wi a VIP; at next convenience store, I thought 'oh one pack wont hurt'. It took another five years, maybe to stop again. Most of the really addicted ones at AA start getting fidgety after that hour's meeting and they head for the parkinglot for a hit of nicotine. Been there, done that. I know better than to 'try just one' because that addiction center just reactivates; no amt of counseling or calling your sponsor removes that til it wears off. I think the shrinks say it takes abt 3 weeks of straight abstinance for the insane drive to become manageable.

Once at the pool we were talking about drugs and such, and this guy said even TALKING about coke brings back the cravings; so we changed the subject.

Goddam that pusherman! I still sometimes wonder what I can put some olive juice into a non-alcoholic drink to enjoy the flavor of a dirty martini.

I'd say anybody who has recurring cravings needs to find a shrink to subscribe that Naltrexone I taked about A tiny pill; my last guy says take just a half and it might be just enough to keep you away from thinkinga about it. its a craving supressor that goes right to the spot their research said is that craving center...for some its overeating, for others, it works for gambling addictions. I like sharing that tidbit because it sure worked for me like it did a fellow who told me about it. Sure as hell cheaper than good booze or a good lawyer to get out of a jam!

Our alcoholic friend may not want to think about it if if makes him unfomcortable, but the 12th Step is all about helping others; he apparently has to keep repeating that step as sour as he is about the whole topic.

Lucky is the drunk who sobers up BEFORE his/her spouse files papers. Those are very motivating stories for guys who want to keep it together and need a little push to go see somebody.
