better give my heart a listen

PERSEPHONE

Persephone tilted her head at Talya’s words, concerned and intrigued. Why did she feel the need to forget the father of her child? Had he done something to her? She bit her tongue, resisting the urge to press her right away. As it turned out, however, she didn’t need to.

She still didn’t know who the Good Witch was, but it seemed apparent that she was whoever Talya had been staying with at one point, and that the father was somebody who had gotten entangled in herd drama with said mare. Her teeth ground together at the thought of the stallion shouting at her. It was impossible to know for sure based on Talya’s piecemeal tale alone, but Persephone was immediately suspicious of the unknown man and whether he might have taken advantage of her innocent nature.

“That doesn’t sound very nice,” Persephone said carefully, picking over her words. “But it’s impossible to forget the father of your child, Talya.”

She sighed softly, looking down at Kestrel with a half-smile on her lips.

“I have two children of my own now,” she added, turning her gaze back towards the girl. “I should know. So if he isn’t a nice guy and you don’t want him in your life, or Kestrel’s, that’s ok – I will help you, if I need it – but you can’t forget him. Best not to drive yourself crazy trying to – you have someone who needs you at your best now.”

She paused, watching carefully for Talya’s reaction.

“What was his name? Maybe I could talk to him for you, if that would help – or keep him away from you, whichever you decide.”
