Ella tossed her refined head, ecstatic that her neigh had been answered so quickly - and by a brassy baritone that promised a boy. Excitement, and maybe a pinch of anxiety, flushed through her, giving her a giddiness that was almost pranceworthy. She refrained, however, choosing to compose herself despite. She wasn’t some silly filly that was so easily carried away by the fantastical notion that every man she met would be like daddy and take great care of her.

No, mama had seen to that, nipping whatever daydreams in the bud by the hard truths of reality. Boys needed years to build up confidence, and most younger stallions were pushy and rude and really only wanted to duel with one another. No matter how sweet they talked or told her how pretty she was, Ella knew that most of the time, safety was with her fellow mares. Especially older ones.

As he comes up to her and speaks, Ella couldn’t help but give him a proper once-over. He was handsome, his body bulky and strong; a good contrast to her lithe and willowy frame. Choosing not to answer his first question, she arched her neck. “Hello, handsome,’ she purred, giving him a wink. “Do you think so? Is that a compliment?”

She assumed that, like most men, he appreciated her for what she was: ravishingly gorgeous and ultimately a sparkly shiny trinket to keep that would make strong and pretty foals and meld happily into herd life. To make a family with. To be fair, her lifetime wants and goals were aligned perfectly with purpose: she was a simple mare with simple desires.
