courage, dear heart;

Since the raid attempt, Isla had kept as much to herself as possible. She'd not been particularly social during any moment of this imprisonment, but she grew even more reclusive now as if by hiding and moving away she would be able to shirk Warwick's gaze. She didn't like the way he looked at her. Did not like the way he spoke of her, or to her, or about her. Even the other Inlet inhabitants stank of danger to the little roan, who had learned the hard way that no one was to be trusted.

If anything, the big gray's misplaced rescue attempt had only made everything worse. It had reminded the little spotted beast that she existed, and that was the worst of all. Every day she could feel his beady little eyes on her, could practically hear the wheels turning in his head. Their arrangement had been simple, and while it had been entirely one-sided and unfair, with her being given no choice in the matter, it had at least been familiar. She had the foreboding sense that he wanted something else now.

As if summoned by the very thought, the spotted stallion approached and she turned her hips away from him, pinning him with narrowed eyes that had gone white at the edges. "Why is that my problem?" She snapped, tail snapping at her thin sides. Her muscles remained tense in case she needed to dash away, but not even torture would sap the sass in her tone. Better sense suggested that she soften her word choice and cause as few problems as possible, but there was this strange sense of having nothing else to lose that emboldened her.

What else would he do? Hurt her? She was already half gone emotionally, and at this point, she wasn't sure any of that would make a further difference. He hadn't seemed interested in children last time, and she was not about to offer one either. While a child might help to bolster her own spirits, what life would she even be giving them? She had no herd. No family. No freedom. Not even a scrap of happiness to grant to another child. It was only luck that had allowed her to escape another round of motherhood in the Lagoon, and she was praying that her luck would continue to hold here.
