Cold as the December Wind

I had been paused comfortably with my nose to the fauna beneath me as I munched on the edible bits I had found. My nose had shot upwards though as eyes swept swiftly over the landscape before me. I didn't know the voice well yet but it sounded like Yaga, our queen. She sounded terrified and the cry was a firm warning.

Go. Don't stop and don't look back. Just run. I didn't understand why honestly until the weird scent struck me. It wasn't equine. No, it was something else. A boar. I had come across them before and steered clear of them. They were very territorial and you just didn't want to ever cross one. It could be very dangerous.

I knew that Viceroy was with his mother right now and that he would be okay. They would run. I swiftly pulled my body around and moved in the direction of the sound of Yaga's warning bellow. It had not been far from me which concerns me. Were we too close? Was this going to be a big problem? It could turn into one I figured as anything could. I didn't know how this might turn out any better than anyone else in the area. The children and those injured would be in the most danger honestly. The problem was that I could smell the metallic tinge of blood mingling with Baby Yaga's scent and I knew that could be a bad thing.

A very bad thing. Her scent would carry to the boar and call to him even more. Drive him into a frenzy of wild instincts. You didn't fight an angry hog though. I couldn't hear any squeals but I heard the rumbling grunts and growls from the massive beast before I saw him. My glistening eyes dance quickly over the beast as I fall into motion alongside Yaga. Gently but quickly my nose bumps against her shoulder in a clean spot.

"Go! We got this." It wasn't necessarily a command as it wasn't my right. It was more of a relieving notion for Yaga that she wasn't alone and that help was around. I knew we wouldn't be alone for long either. Dagda would come I imagined soon enough. The massive boar grew closer to us as he came crashing through the brush after us. One could hear the snapping and crunches in it's wake. My forelegs dug down with a quick force.

Those powerful hindquarters lifted behind me in hopes of hearing the sound of contact. It wasn't bone crunching but I'd felt the force of my hooves hitting his body. Again all four hooves have hit the ground as I propelled myself onward still. Hopefully it would buy us enough time to put some distance between us and the boar. Hopefully it was enough to have momentarily stunned the massive hog. We just couldn't take any chances.
