Rain in the perfect storm (birthing post) Posted on May 6, 2025 at 07:34:06 PM by Raini
She had been uncomfortable for days, a sure sign it wouldn’t be long before the foal arrived. Seeing as how this foal was apparently going to be nocturnal with how active it was at night, she had taken to walking slowly in the dark. She had picked a spot she would choose to foal in, depending on when the little thing decided to come and had made sure Nico knew where it was.
With a storm on the horizon she had hoped it wouldn’t be tonight, but as the first raindrops started to fall her water had broken and the contractions started.
Now she was glad she had chosen a sheltered spot, under some close canopy trees and sheltered by a rocky outcrop along one side, almost as if she had expected something like bad weather to happen? Maybe because she had expected it.
Dropping to the ground, the labour was thankfully quick considering how uncomfortable she had been the past several days. Exhausted she gave herself a minute to recoup once she felt her foal moving before sitting up and reaching her head round to the dunskin overo colt who nickered to her, well you picked a perfect storm to be born into didn’t you little one she said with a smile.
Hauling herself up she got to work cleaning off the shivering foal, the action would also help to warm him and get him moving. His first few attempts to stand where met with failure, as was normal for newborns. She chuckled at his somewhat furious expression, when he tried again she gentle used her nose to help steady him but when he went to move he toppled over with a irate squeal. Shaking her head with a smile that was when she heard movement.
Switching immediately into protective mother she span herself around, placing herself in front of the small bundle on the floor. Ears laced back, stance aggressive Who’s there? she demanded. If it was anyone but Nico who knew where she was, or Tino who could probably find her they were going to get a welcome full of teeth.
