baby, you can find me under the lights Posted on June 30, 2025 at 00:54:01 AM by Calanthe
The newborn had navigated clumsily out of the cave mouth to follow her dam, teetering on her pale spindly legs until she finally found her feet. Her green eyes had squinted against the daylight as they emerged from the darkness. The small filly’s eyes finally adjusted, and then they widened in surprise at the towering pines and conifers scattered before her. Tiny form tucked close to her mother's side, the girl moved in tandem with the mare as they passed beneath the boughs of the things that she would later learn were called ‘trees.’ All while they walked, her green eyes took in the world with a cautious awe.
When the trees gave way to an open grassy area, Calanthe sniffed the air curiously. She eyed the bright plumes of flowers her mother passed moments before, licking her lips in anticipation. The swipe of her tongue wet the girl's nose some, wiping away the last of her remaining dewy milk beard. Curly, fluffy tendrils of her tail bobbed this way and that as the appendage wiggled excitedly. The champagne filly had been inching toward the bright-colored balls of fluff when she flinched at the sound of her mother's sudden call. Swiveling her head to look toward her dam, Calanthe found nothing amiss. No tension in the lines of her mother's form that might indicate danger afoot. So, the girl turned her attention back to the flowers.
Calanthe set off, taking a few off-balance steps in their direction. Her eyes grew wide and round as she looked at the flowers. So enraptured was the little champagne filly that she hardly noticed the arrival of another horse. It was young stallion, though Calanthe didn't have the word for it. Her little nose worked busily, sniffing out that essential biological difference between the newcomer and the champagne pair. At some point though, Calanthe's wild, mercurial interest pulled her back to her mother and the stranger. Smiling all the while, the filly walked back over and then nibbled her mother's shoulder.
