Rain in the perfect storm (birthing post)

Raini was getting a old hand at this foaling thing now, maybe. She had taken herself off to a small secluded spot the last few night, her large belly making her feel uncomfortable as the thing also tried to kick its way out of her. She was restless tonight, which likely meant birth was imminent.

She had noticed Tino hanging around her more than normal, not getting in her way just observing her. She smiled, her eldest son was keeping checks on her, similar to how Nico would. For all they had been through when Tino was born and growing up constantly on the move, her boy was turning into such a kind hearted, loyal young stallion, something she knew Nico had played a big part in.

She groaned as she felt more echos of pain go through her belly, something that she’d been dealing with since the sun had set several hours ago. She paced slowly, restless and uncomfortable, wishing this babe would just get a move on and not prolong this. Her other 2 foals had arrived quickly with none of this hanging on, the thought gave her pause as she remembered her mother once saying something about colts coming fast whilst fillies often made their mothers wait, like the princess’ they were. The thought made her chuckle just as a sharper pain sliced through her abdomen, a contraction.

The birth was easy and reasonably fast thankfully as she now stood, cleaning off an almost white filly with bright blue eyes, ignoring the lingering echos of pain that she knew would ease off.
The filly sneezed several times, shivering in the cool air as her body worked to warm her up with the help from her mother. Her belly telling her she needed something only mother could give her, at mothers gentle nudges the filly attempted to move legs that were too long, her front legs eventually getting out in front but still she didn’t stand, taking stock of everything that was going on.

Raini chuckled, nudging her daughters rump again to encourage her to try and stand. Instead the newborns big blue eyes just looked up at her. Raini found it fascinating how different all her foals were as she continued licking the foal to help stimulate her and clean her off whilst giving gentle nudges to her rump ever few moments to encourage her to stand.
Eventually the filly got the hint as she staggered to try and stand only to fall back down.

The almost white filly didn’t instantly try again, instead she rested for a few minutes before hunger made her try to stand again, this time getting on her hooves a little quicker even if she was wobbly whilst trying to get the hang of this overly long legs all foals had. She didn’t move for several minutes just stood whilst she try to get a bit better balance, at her mothers urging she tried to take a tentative step forward, stumbling and crashing into her mothers side as Raini brought her head round to steady the babe before encouraging her forward a bit more until she’s in the right position to suckle.

As her daughter latches on Raini lets out a contented sight, eyes closing at the release of hormones that normally came with a newborns first feed. Still alert her ears swivelled as they caught a sound, movement coming closer. Opening her eyes she looks around wearily Nico? she calls softly, expecting it to be him. When a figure moves out from the shadows though it isn’t the painted stallion she expected, whilst the height and build weren’t much different from Nico’s, the coat colour was grey instead of painted. She relaxed Tino she said with a smile to her eldest son.

Tino kept his distance, he’d learned a little from Nico regarding mares often being protective over their newborns, he didn’t think his mother would be hostile to him in the slightest but he would still wait until she said it was ok to approach. Mother he greeted softly I wanted to make sure you were ok and that you were both protected if Nico wasn’t around he said, explaining what he was doing here. Raini was about to reply when Tino’s ears swivelled, catching a sound behind him, he spun quickly, ears laced back against his poll as he struck the ground a few times, keeping himself between this unknown and his mother and newborn sister.

Raini smiled but said nothing, she had already caught Nico’s scent on the wind, knowing it was a very high chance it was him coming to check on them but allowed Tino to figure this out for himself, it was good practice for her eldest.
