For as long as Ameyuki could remember it had just been her and her mother living in the forest. Her mother had taught her many things and Ameyuki loved learning new things. She had been told many times that one day they would leave this place to join the rest of the herd. Ameyuki was starting to believe that this was an empty promise until one morning Mizuki suddenly told her it was time to leave.
One small step in front of the other Ameyuki walked along. She was slow but that was because her blue eyes were curiously taking in the new sights. And of course she was nervous about meeting the rest of her family but there was also excitement fizzing just beneath the surface. Every now and then she felt her mother gently nudge her rump, a clear sign she was being too slow and needed to move on. Ameyuki was starting to worry that her mother would lose patience with her and she turned around with an apologetic look on her small face. However she was greeted with affirmations. She was lucky to be born to such a gentle and understanding mother.
Suddenly she spotted a painted stranger up ahead and the little filly froze with uncertainty. She looked back at her mother who spotted the stallion a few moments later. “Nicodemusu,” her mother called out before trotting towards him. Ameyuki watched as her mother tenderly embraced this stallion with her neck. It was hard because she was whispering but she also heard her mother say, “I’m sorry, it’s been too long, I hope I did not make you worry too much.” The little filly assumed that this was her father before Mizuki looked back at her and confirmed her assumption. “Ameyuki, this is your father, Nicodemus,” for a moment Ameyuki blinked in confusion because she thought her mother had used a slightly different name a moment ago.
Tentatively Ameyuki walked forward, he was much taller than her mother, if it wasn’t for the gentle expression on his face he might have been considered scary. “Hello,” she said shyly as she reached up to greet her father for the first time.
