Rules

• The Lagoon is where homeless stallions come to live as a brotherhood. Mares may not live here except as captives or companions for the Leaders.

• Soldiers keep mainly to fighting, Thieves keep mainly to raiding, and Associates may do both, neither, or act as diplomats. Members may issue their own battles and raids, but should generally consult the General, Marauder or Boss for permission.

• All major decisions are determined by vote, but the Boss maintains order within the Lagoon and has the final say.

• Elections for leadership positions will be held every TLI summer, provided the qualifying criteria are met.

• You can find detailed information about how the Lagoon works on the Rules page.

• Upon election, the Boss can issue a rule for members to follow during their tenure. It is up to leadership to enforce.

she bargains with the world

Briseis
so everything she wants will come to her
For the past few weeks, Briseis had been all but stuck to Clio’s side, like a smudge of tree sap on her coat, or a prickly burr so tangled in her mane that it had become knotted so tightly that it could not be coaxed out.

In the beginning, the filly had been like that too, nervous about navigating a strange new world, filled with stallions that felt no paternal protectiveness toward her. The Lagoon had scared her - not the stallions lurking in the shadows, but the land itself, where the ground seemed to play tricks on the eye. She’d had a nightmare, early in their tenure here, that she’d step wrong, and the ground would swallow her down into the marshy depths. She’d drown, and there’d be nothing but her bones left, buried in the mud, and her mother would never know what had become of her.

But, as all things did, not least of all the trees that had sheltered them in that hidden alcove Tattoo had led them to upon their arrival, in response to Clio’s beseeching, Briseis had grown. A yearling now, she was quietly confident in her own way. Still wary around the stallions that called the Lagoon home, but no longer afraid of the Lagoon itself.

She had grown up here, and instead of fear, there was familiarity and respect. She knew the terrain in the areas of the bachelor territory that she and her mother stuck to well enough that she could navigate her way with her eyes closed. Not that she ever did, because her respect did not come with trust, and she was wise enough to know that she could never test the Lagoon like that. The moment she did, she knew it would test her back.

The last few weeks, however, she had ventured out alone less and less, wanting to be with Clio as the time for the arrival of her little sibling drew closer. Clio would never admit it out loud, but Briseis could tell she was struggling, though whether it was being in the Lagoon, or being away from Carthage and Atlantis that she struggled with more, that was a mystery.

However, since grazing was sparse in the Lagoon, and she could navigate far more easily than her mother at present, Briseis ventured out in search of food, to leave what little grazing was nearby for her mother. Clio wasn’t happy about it, but she couldn’t force Briseis to eat, and she could not starve herself for one child’s sake without putting her unborn child at risk.

And so, her hunger sated, she turned to make her way back to where her mother was sequestered, when a sudden rush of movement in her periphery had the yearling filly startling. A shrill squeal of fear and pain pierced the air as a swiping set of claws grazed her pale golden hindquarters, and instinct drove her from the safe path into the marsh that sucked eagerly at her legs.

The wildcat was hungry enough to plunge into the swamp after her, but Briseis did not falter, nor fight. She was not afraid anymore, and she did trust the Lagoon, trusted that it would protect her now, as she doggedly moved away from the predator that followed closer behind, venturing deeper into the territory, where she had not ventured before, her alabaster head held high above the murky water.

Ignoring the stinging ache in her hand leg, Briseis bit her tongue to keep herself from crying out for help again, because she couldn’t bear the thought of her mother hearing, and something happening to her or the baby when she came running.
