i see the forces for what they truly are

yet i'm reminded of my beating heart
((Charybdis is at max rank, so I am purely tossing in here for character development))

She had returned from her roaming to find the heart of Cimarron abandoned once more. There was no living soul waiting for her - the daughter that she had managed to keep close and had tried to teach had forsaken her. Kalahira was gone. The mostly-white mare had shaken the salt water from her dripping two-toned mane and climbed to the highest point of the tiny island, until she stood, chest heaving, shoulders tense beneath the darkened red mantle of the path of bay coloring.

There, just as she raised her head to bellow her rage at the clouded sky, lightning flickered along the far horizon, and a great wind whipped the waves into a frenzy as the storm that had been building broke.

Charybdis weathered it alone on the rocky spit of land, and as soon as the sea calmed enough for her to navigate, she left the ruins of Cimarron for the last time, and made for the Crossing. She made landfall in sight of the foothills of the Peak. Discerning that her daughter would not have immediately sought to explore such high ground, she ventured south, and it was on the cusp of the Commons, with its many mingling scents, that Charybdis first sensed something about the light changing.

It danced strangely across the ground before her, reminding Charybdis of the way light reflected off the surface of water in sea caves. But there was no water here, no enclosed spaces. Just the darkening sky above her, far earlier than normal.

Lifting her head and looking skyward, she watched as the sun was covered in shadow. "What does it mean, dis sign from de very heavens?" Charybdis murmured aloud, squinting as she tried to process what was happening, but quickly bowed her head at the brightness, blinking as a lingering aura obscured her vision. Everything seemed to be getting darker still, and suddenly feeling extremely unnerved, Charybdis shook her head and darted forward, disoriented and confused.

When her seeing eye still remained impaired, a panic unlike anything she had felt before gripped at her chest and breath quickening, a deep, guttural scream tore up her throat. One of her hooves caught on something and she stumbled. Just managing to catch herself, the pale mare jolted to a stop and stood there, snorting raggedly as her heart hammered in her chest, waiting for what vision she had to return.
