Things... (football, sex--not TMI, obesity, appearance, coffee)

1. It seems like the percentage of obese college students has taken a sharp uptick in recent years. Maybe it's my imagination or just a blip, but kids who are 18-22 now were 12-16 when the pandemic hit. I wonder if there's a connection there. It's not ridiculous to think that their physical activity level went way down and their diets got worse during their teen years.

2. Speaking of weight/appearance, it's not considered a nice thing to say in our society, but it couldn't be more clear that among the students I encounter over the years, there's a clear trend that those who are at the top end of the curve on intelligence and talent are also more likely to be good-looking. Selective breeding over multiple generations: it's just genetics' version of "the rich get richer," after all.

3. I read recently that the average married couple in their 60s has sex about 20 times per year. Yikes. We're way ahead of that benchmark, but we're also barely in our 60s. The future is NOT so bright that I have to wear shades, apparently.

4. Roasting coffee. The cost of a dedicated coffee roaster (in the $400-500 range) would definitely pay for itself fairly quickly if you are willing to roast regularly. The type of beans I like to buy, purchased green, run about 35-50% of what purchasing them roasted costs. I've been roasting on Wednesdays and Saturdays, in batches of about 1/2 pound. One advantage is that by the time you get an inkling that you might be tired of what you're currently drinking, it's gone and you're drinking something else. I currently have a rotation of 4-5 different coffees that I have on hand green. Of course, you have to be willing to take some time to roast regularly, or else it kills the financial benefit, and the coffee quality benefit. (Roasted coffee declines considerably in freshness/flavor after a week or so.)

5. I read some click-baity article yesterday where Whittingham allegedly responded to a question about position groups that are standing out with RBs and DL. I'm finally jaded enough about coach-speak that there is no way I'm buying that. If the DL are simply good enough that no one finds it necessary to mention them between now and August, I'd be happy with that. This, though, seems like obvious fluffing of a position group we all know is not going to be a strength on this team.
