So sad, you pukes.
Maybe a TIC in his hand helps, maybe it doesn’t. Nobody knows that for sure, and nobody should be acting like they know exactly what happens in that basement. A TIC is a tool. A good tool, sure. But it is still only a tool. It does not replace training, discipline, officers leading from the front, sounding floors, reading conditions, knowing your buildings, and guys actually giving a ####.
There is way too much apathy on this job. Too many guys treat training like a punishment. Checking equipment is somehow a burden. Going over basics is “doing too much.” Then when something bad happens everyone wants to act shocked. And officers are part of it too. Too many want to be buddies instead of officers. Too many want everyone to like them instead of making sure their company is squared away. Leadership is not being popular. Leadership is making sure your people are ready when it goes bad.
If the city has TICs sitting somewhere, issue them. Train the companies on them. Figure out the recording issue, disable it, write a policy, whatever. But don’t let safety equipment sit because somebody is afraid of what firemen might record. That is insane. But don’t kid yourself either. A TIC is not going to fix a lazy house. It is not going to fix bad habits. It is not going to fix officers who don’t lead. It is not going to fix a department that waits until after a funeral to pretend it cares about training and accountability.
Altman deserves better than rumors and internet bull####. So do all the CFD members we have lost. Every one of these deaths should make this department take a hard look at itself, not for a week, not until the funeral is over, but for real.
Rest in peace Altman, and rest in peace to every CFD member who has died doing this job.
It does not have to keep being like this. But nothing changes if everyone keeps shrugging their shoulders and going back to the same old bull####. Replies:
