Hope it gives you hell; Part Two

As Jack got to his feet and marched towards him, Henry squared himself up to the younger boy. It was a gesture which on an adult would have been the epitome of stubbornness and steadfastness, and whilst the effect was not quite the same on a child who lacked the broad chest and powerful shoulders of an adult man, the message was undeniably clear. You have no power over me. Blue eyes watched out of the corner of his eye as Jack’s tiger cub crawled its way towards his sister, and Renn scooped the small creature up and set it on her knee so that it would be safe, waiting with baited breath to see what the two boys would do. She did not like fights, and she did not like being in the middle of things, she just tried to implore them to see reason, as effectively as any five year old could. As bold blue eyes met with the steadfast grey of Jack’s, Henry took a step forwards to meet him, a great feeling of dislike pulsed between the two of them and they were too young to know the reasons why. It could have been the personality differences, Henry’s hot and Jack’s cold, the temper and the rigid calm, like water and oil they would just not mix, pushing away from one another in the most literal of ways.

The words the younger boy speaks are almost hissed and Renn does not hear any of it, her blue-green eyes wide and anxious, as she watched the confrontation between her brother and her new friend. ”You sound like a stuck record” Henry hissed back, his voice just as low and undetectable, “you’re a fairy, not an animal, our world doesn’t work like that and if you had half a brain you’d know that.” It took a lot of self restraint not to laugh as the other boy pressed on, and Henry felt his top lip peeling back, the tension obvious in his small body, though his hands had not balled into fists as Jack’s had done, for his sister’s sake, he was staking in control as much as he was able. “you’re no King, you’re a nobody who is no where near good enough to be my sister’s friend, and I would like to see you take me, one day, you’ll have to show me.”

It was at that moment that Jack put on a display of crocodile tears, and Henry found himself rolling his eyes in exasperation at the obvious display of dramatics. He noticed rather quickly however that his sister had been fooled and stared at her incredulously as she simpered over the younger boy. “You’re not buying this are you Renn?” he asked her as she took Jack’s hand in the way she usually did with Henry’s. When the girl did not reply, and simply stared down at the sand by her feet her twin sighed heavily, his temper finally getting the better of him. “Fine, I’ll go find Flynn then, I don’t need you!” and with that he turned and began to walk back up the beach, not looking back to see tears gathering in Renn’s eyes.

Henry had not gotten far by the time the first wave hit encompassing the beach and everything and everyone upon the sands. It happened so quickly that he hardly had any time to react and as the water closed over his head everything seemed to go dark, and that darkness seemed to stretch on for hours, the salt and the water filling his nostrils. It was in fact, only a few seconds before the boy managed to break back to the surface, inhaling a deep lungful of air, his eyes stinging from the salt which had entered them before he had had the chance to lower his eyelids. The current was strong and Henry found himself being swept along, his child limbs unable to oppose the force. The decision to transform was not a conscious one, it was instinctual, and soon he was aware of having four feet instead of one and began to fight back against the power of the water, so much of who Henry was, was instinct, heart over head in almost everything he did.

The next few minutes seemed to stretch on for eternity, and it was a relief when his deer body became wedged lightly between two rocks, which helped to keep him steady. The sound of his older brother’s voice was an even bigger relief, and kicking himself free he swam towards Flynn who was riding atop one of his turtles, and Henry watched as the older boy summoned a second creature and rested his foot on it to make it solid for his younger sibling. Turning back into his natural form, Henry climbed up onto the turtles shell, running his fingers through his hair so that his fringe did not drip water into his eyes. Renn. The question sent an ice dagger through his heart, what had happened to her! He should have been with her, then he might have been able to protect her, he did not trust Jack to do that. The young boy shakes his head in response to his brother’s question, tones loosing all the confidence and bravado they usually did, “I was but…then I left, she was with a…a..friend, they were boring so, I was c-coming to look for you” It was only now that he was out of the water that Henry began to feel the cold and shivers racked his small body. “we were over there” he said, pointing in the direction where the strange rock formation they had been playing close to still managed to protrude above the flood waters. The puppy husky chose that instant to throw himself at Henry licking his face with usual enthusiasm. Following his brother’s instructions Henry wrapped his arms around a fidgeting Denahi who had been instructed to stay and try and keep the smaller boy warm, before Flynn urged the turtles on in the direction which Henry had indicated earlier.

A small, pale skinned hand grasped a rock some way to their left, it was Flynn who spotted it first and cried out with a mixture of hope and dread in his heart. They rounded the rock in question and breathed a huge sigh of relief, there was Renn, looking exceptionally wet, cold and exhausted, but definitely alive. Henry watched as Flynn pulled their sister up onto the turtle’s back, her arms wrapping around her older brother’s waist. “you’ve got to find Jack!” the girl implored, and Henry’s brow contracted into a frown once more.
