What's love got to do with it?

Merlin was scavenging again; looking around for something to eat. Ignitus sniffed behind him, though not as enthusiastic as Merlin. It was easy for the huge grythdragon to find something to eat; he just plucked prey out of the sky and shared it with Merlin usually. But for once, Merlin wanted to find something himself. Are you sure you don't want me to get something for you, boy? asked the grythdragon, fond of his nickname "boy" despite Merlin having practically raised him. Yes! Merlin shouted. Hang on a minute... I think I can smell something! he yipped, going into a full-on run . Picking up his gangly legs, the boy scurried across the river side and carried on jumping and leaping energetically, until apparently the floor gave way beneath him. Confused, Merlin scrabbled about for a grip on something - anything - as he fell through the air. Aggh! shouted Merlin as he fell into the river with a splash. He had been so excited that he hadn't even realised where he was going, until he had trundled head-first off the bank and into the water. Picking himself up, fur plastered to his skinny body unattractively hence the water, Merlin looked up, drenched muzzle tilting in different directions. He was SURE he had smelt something! And it turns out he had found a scent trail for once. However, it was the scent of a wolf, rather than prey. Not that Merlin dared hunt anyway; he just ate the abandoned kills of other creatures a bit like a hyena.

Aghast, Merlin took in the wolf that stood on the opposite bank. He was HUGE, huger than Merlin had ever seen before; and Merlin had met a fair few wolves in his time. The wolf looked quite old however, his age reminding him of Toric, who had once given him a lesson on hunting and blessings when he was a fair bit younger.

His coak left behind at his den in his pack, Merlin looked almost normal today; just a shiny black wolf with a white under belly and face, if it were not for the huge grythdragon that flanked him. Merlin, don't you even think of going and... Ignitus started, trying to stop Merlin from foolishly trying to make friends yet again. But Merlin was already doggy-paddling his way across the river, until he leapt upon the bank where the sleeping wolf lay.

Recognition suddenly crossed his features then. This was Lone Zelda! Lone Zelda used to run his birth-pack, Merlin knew! His mother Witch had told him how LZ had accepted her into the pack, and Merlin had seen him around a fair few times while he'd been a very young pup. Hello! Merlin exclaimed, blue-grey eyes darting everywhere for a second or two before finally falling on the huge wolf. Wow, you're huge! Are you Lone Zelda? I think you are. I used to live in your pack! he exclaimed, all enthusiastic as per usual. He was unknowing about Coral Flower's change of hands, at the moment, and was still under the impression that LZ owned it. My mother is Witch! She had lots of children! I once went looking for her, but she's left, I think. he rambled, yipping and running around the wolf. Wow, you're huge! he repeated, taking in the massive structure. In fact, the runty, skinny wolf was actually looking up at LZ despite the fact the wolf was lying down. How did you get so big? Do you eat lots of secret food? What kind of food is the secret food? Is it dragons? Merlin carried on talking, going off on his excitableness more than anything.

At this point, Ignitus crossed the river, picked up Merlin with one great claw and held the struggling boy, holding him out of LZ's way. So sorry... he's a bit... special. said the gryhpon-dragon, rolling his eyes when Merlin started to protest.
