At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

Terrel was delighted that Mae was also content to match him for company – being isolated from everyone else was no fun at all and the boy preferred laughter over silence. It got him off worries and he hoped he provided decent company back. A solitary life was not for the multi coloured wolf, pack life along with close friends and his mum would suit him just fine. For now at least he could live in bliss with only minor worries until he once again grew. And then he would probably be on the same quest that Channing was – a mate. Though Terrel did not see the point of him having one just yet, he had a life and did not wish to be tied down so soon. Or perhaps those were just the dreams of a young adult – not sure was route to take, twisting from here to there and somehow ending over there. Where? He did not know.

He was relieved that it was not essential to put up a guard against Mae, they could both just lounge about without worry. Terrel knew she wasn’t bad and Mae knew (or he hoped.) that he wasn’t bad. Of course, it was always respectful to be on alert mode and have a courteous posture. And to those thoughts, Terrel said why bother? They were pack mates; it was not needed to be all polite and fake. He would have rather had a real conversation and end up hating them than a fake conversation and live a lie and believe that your life was awesome, no troubles at all. Imagine a world with polite words, with polite people, polite hunting, civilized packs and no fun at all! No way would Terrel live under these circumstances. He knew how to have fun and believe me – he have it.

It was easy for Terrel to be open to Mae and it probably explained the reason he had blurted out the private information; he had not meant to. But from an early age Terrel had been quite uncivilized. As a pup he had believed, grown up brutes equal bad, grown up females equal good. Though he no longer claimed that opinion he always felt it was easier to talk to girls. But why was he blurting all of this out now? For one simple reason: he had never had anyone to talk to apart from Channing and even he had been shy of talk to her, fearing shame that he might have classed down upon him.

“Was your home nice?” The multi coloured boy asked, hoping he wasn’t intruding in any private business. He tried to hide his curiosity but they had not yet spoken about Mae that much and this was a perfect opportunity. “If you don’t mind me asking of course,” Terrel added meekly seeing that she struggled to pull away her gaze from the river. “Were you thinking about memories?” He enquired, titling his head slightly to the left. Memories also troubled him at times.

“I guess so, it’s just pleasant to hear someone else clarify it and block out the little voice in the back of my head. Saw Tooth is a strong pack; I just sometimes need to be reminded of that.” Terrel said with a smile before adding: “Oh yes, she’ll always have me whether she likes it or not.” He grinned at Mae before his gaze was diverted up to the crows. They were noisy, troublesome crows who were ‘purposely attempting to ruin everyone’s day.’ Mae seemed amused at Terrel little story about the crows. Who knows if it was actually true? No, it was probably not true.

“That’s good.” He replied gently, not one hundred per cent sure on what to say but a smile was held on his kissers anyway. Terrel grew bored of sitting and scrambled down to lay on his belly but he winced as sharp rocks dug into him. Gulping, the boy shifted around and finally got at least a little bit more comfortable. At least it did not hurt. Mae saw amusement in this and was teasing him with the word, ‘comfortable.’ Terrel stopped to glare at her, “yes very.” He said grimly, he was not annoyed at her but his expression was full of grimace.

Upon his next question, Mae seemed a little hesitant and he worried that he’d made her nervous. He said nothing but patiently waited for her answer. She seemed to cower behind an invisible wall, her ears flopping ever so slightly to the left and right. She answered though and suggested that she believed they were friends, or that she’d like to be his friend. A smile appeared on the brute’s face. “Ace,” he replied, his tail thumping gently to the side. “That’s good to know, because I’d like to be your friend too.”

After a few moments of silence, Terrel decided to change the subject. “So, we’ve spoken about me now let’s talk about you.” He said gently, “if you could have any rank in the world and you can make up one if you want, what the rank be?” He asked, curious to find out more about Mae. He knew what his rank would be but what would hers be?
“Could be anything to fishing,” he paused and grinned at Mae, knowing that she probably would not go with that one, after all they were both terrible at fishing! “To, I don’t know… Alpha I guess. But you can choose obviously ordinary ranks too.”

It was simple game but an effective way of getting to know a bit more about someone. Ranks could portray someone too – an alpha would be a dominant wolf, the beta would be someone strong and fair, omega would be someone generous, full of laughter and able to calm hostile situations. Although in Saw Tooth, omegas were the rest of the pack without ranks which confused him slightly. He did not understand what Lota, Zeta, Eplison, Delta or Gamma did…

Terrel shifted once more onto his haunches and there he sat, watching Mae intently for an answer.
