How lonely is the night without the howl of the wolf?

Whatever she was doing it was working. The brute was starting to relax. His face began to soften and the once tense muscles were starting to loosen. Once again Henadin shot a brief smile her way and the lass felt a small smile tug on her own kissers. She didn’t feel so bogged down with her fears anymore, it seemed that the mild conversation she found herself in was somewhat soothing. Instead of worrying about the future, things to come and her adopted son, she was too busy trying to work out what to say to Henadin to make him feel more comfortable.

Without saying a word the lads grey cranium nodded in response to her question. She figured if there were no need for words, the lad would not use them. He would not force the words out if there was no need. Another wall of silence hit the pair and Channing guessed that to some extent the lad was happy that there was a break in the conversation. For some strange reason Channing felt quite comfortable in the silence too. She had only been here once before, and that was very briefly, so she hadn’t really had chance to take a look at the view. During the welcoming silence the ess gazed round the area. It really was a beautiful place; she guessed that was why it made the perfect place to search for a mate.

As she took in the scenery, her orbs where distracted as the lad’s maw turned to the ground. She turned her attention back to the brute and gave a soft smile, hoping that everything was okay. She was just about to ask if everything was alright when the brute spoke again. His gaze was not fixed on her as it usually was and he seemed to be thinking hard about what to say next. As his next sentence entered the air, the lad seemed to flinch at the sound of his own voice. Channing watched as he did and couldn’t help but feel slightly sorry for him; although she didn’t show it as she wasn’t sure how he would take sympathy. She wanted to assure him that she didn’t mind his voice but thought better of it for now. “Long enough to know my way around.” She smiled softly. She couldn’t tell him exactly how long she had been here for she wasn’t quite sure. Well to be honest she couldn’t remember. His eyes were still turned away from her. He really must have been ashamed of himself. The lad started to speak a tale of his sister and himself when he stopped suddenly. She shuffled slightly adjusting her position as the lad turned his gaze back to her, his face showing a look of apology.

Channing found her face dropping slightly, the welcoming smile disappearing. Why had he suddenly stopped his story? Of course she wouldn’t pry if he didn’t want to tell, but what was so bad he had to apologise for it? “There’s no need to apologise. If you don’t want to tell you don’t have to.” She was always there as a shoulder to cry on or someone with an open ear to listen to people’s problems, but she would never ask questions unless it was necessary. “So what brings you here?” It seemed like the most reasonable question to ask next. She wasn’t exactly sure why she was here so maybe he wouldn’t know either.
