aurora borealis- noun plural: An aurora that occurs in northern regions of the earth. Also called northern lights.

In the middle of a dense forest of coniferous trees lies the Aurora Borealis pack, its name coming from its location. At certain times of the year, the northern lights appear, dancing almost magically in the sky. A narrow trail leads you through the close evergreens. Giving into temptation, you begin moving your paws. By venturing into this territory, you are venturing into a land belonging to a pair of feared leaders. You have heard rumors of them...but you decide to take your chances and hope that the tales of blood and death are merely fabricated stories to scare wolves.

You have walked nearly five minutes before you realize the sound of paws stepping somewhere from behind. Deciding that you've made a mistake, you quickly turn around, but find that you cannot go any further. Standing before you is one of the mighty kings you've heard of. His blood red pelt clings over perfectly toned bands of muscle. But that isn't what causes such fear in your veins. One of his amber eyes has a horrid, bleeding scar across it, and his good eye seems to stare right through you. His face is expressionless, giving off none of his intentions. You cower away as his jaws part.

"I'm Hell Demon."

His voice was deep and cut through the air like a hot knife through butter. Right where he left off, another voice picks up from behind you. You whirl around and find yourself facing another male with steely muscles beneath his pelt, which seems to consist of every shade of brown. He had startled you, and you're amazed how you hadn't at all detected his approach.

"And I am Ghost...we're the alphas of Aurora Borealis."

His deep voice was laced thickly with a Native American accent. His own golden eyes are directing a harsh glare your way. Now you're caught in the middle...your breathing has become heavy in your panic and you're not sure which to face.

"You've foolishly trespassed into our territory. You face the one called Hell Demon's whose voice is once more addressing you. Get out, or become a corpse along our border."

It's obvious they mean business. So now it's up to you...take your chances and stay, or heed their warning and waste no time getting out with your life.

She breathed in the tension with a sick pit in her stomach, losing herself to the air between her and Kal, tilting into it simply because her legs could no longer support her. Her heart stuttered to the off-tempo rhythm of the questions breaking haltingly from his maw. Each breath he took was higher pitched than the last, and Nika weathered the silence until he’d come to the only conclusion that made any sense. The love of her children permeated her body, and pushed her forward, closer to their father, her one true love. Rohan’s forgiveness gave her strength, but it was Adara’s silent tolerance that gave her confidence. It was her borderline whine asking of her father’s identity that made Nika shiver with dread. Her daughter was still only a child, how could she have left her to handle the burden of what she knew? She wanted to hug the silver wolfess, but could only rock in the piteous aftermath of Adara’s question, nodding as Kal answered. “Yes, Adara… I… I think I am. I’m sorry, I was unaware that I had children. I didn’t know…”

A cry built in her throat, at his lovely confusion, so clear and lost in those blue panels that she was drowning in it. When he looked away to his subordinate shadow, Nika finally allowed herself the faintest of sobs, tasting the pain of holding it back scratching at her throat. It was so hard to see him like this, see his strength weaken and falter, how he could not look to her for reassurance, for he no longer knew who she was. “These wolves are every bit your children. Look at them, how could they not be?” She choked on her words as he turned back to her appeal, a single name slipping softly from his lip, as if enticing her to betray herself by catching the bait, her interest piqued. But Kal spoke without malice, he was simply musing to himself. The next name was her own, and she watched the puzzle of his mind fall into place while mentally preparing herself for the inevitable question that followed. The weight of guilt thrust her crown towards the ground though her words were somehow miraculously clear. “My dear. No, no there were three.” At this confession she jumped back sharply and suddenly, as if stung, recoiling from his presence. Already the fear of his response enhanced her misgivings; of all the judgment she had withstood, his disapproval was the one opinion that she couldn’t take.

With great distress flaring in her eyes, she looked at him and declared, “Aindreas is your kin, as are my daughter, our daughter, Adara, and our son, Rohan. Nothing that I’ve done is any fault of theirs. You may hate me, but if you must, I beg you to do so silently.” Her tone softened, become almost pleading. “Like you, they are merely victims.” In this sentiment she professed her acknowledgment of the crime she had committed against him by taking his children away. Granted, he had never known of their existence at all. It had been foolish to exclude him from their lives. It had been irrational. Hell, she was an irrational wolf. Love had warped her perception of life, and she’d loved for so long, and in equal parts hollowly and with great substance, that she felt a tornado of emotions ripping at her insides.

She wanted the uncomplicated manner of the ebony wolf at her love’s shoulder. She wanted to follow her mate blindly and fight for him and honor him until the end of their days. What crushed her was her position on the other side of that border, waiting for the hackles to rise on the two cronies in front of her, waiting for that passionate poison in the startling blue eyes of the Aurora Borealis subordinate to seep into Kal’s, waiting for him to speak once again dire lullabies locking her into the obscure past.
