Enocra Woodland

Pine, spruce and firs alike...
Dense coniferous forests cover the woodlands, with clearings, paths and the occasional wildberry shrub throughout. Pine, spruce and fir make up much of the forest in the east, with the forest becoming swampier in the west towards Mecor Valley. In the west, cypress trees dominate, with fallen trees creating bridges across and throughout the stillwaters.

As the wind blows strong and seemingly merciless against the trees, the weak leaves fall from their place to be carried away. The dark clouds are high in the sky and rain falls heavy in this stormy night. It is dark and cold outside. In the woodlands, a place most calm and quiet it is possible to hear the trees and few other animals crying for a place to hide from the rain.

Thankfully it is warm inside my den. The way the entrance is made with a slight curve stops some of the cold to enter and all the water. it is warm and dry, a very comfortable place made by myself that I call home. It is not nearly as quiet as I wanted it to be tonight, but it is cozy. My ears are folded back in an attempt to muffle the loud screeching the trees are making and the sound of rain. It is truly very soothing sound, the sound of the rain, but it is just too strong to allow me to sleep. Eyes closed as I waited and tried to sleep. The roar of thunder in the distance is strong in my ears. My form is curled up in a small ball to keep myself as warm as possible.

In one sudden second there was a bright light and one great sound of a thunder striking something close. My head raised and eyes shot open as I realised what just happened. It had been a very close one. A deep breath before allowing my head to lower again. I will be safe here. I've heard stories about wolves being hit by thunder. A rare thing, but something that kills a wolf instantly. I kept trying to sleep.

A familiar scent reached my nostrils and for a moment I remembered my old pack. Fire, the scent of burnt wood. I raised my head and opened my eyes again and with another inhale, I could tell, it wasn't just my imagination. With a quick move I raised to my paws and bolted, getting out of my den. I looked around. There was a yellowish light coming from somewhere, it illuminated everything close. My heart was beating fast in fear. Head turning to look up at a big and old tree. Without thinking twice, I turned my frame and ran.

As I was running, the only thing I could think was. Not again, not again. Fire had taken my pack from me, my family, everything. The tree on fire was staying far behind me as I kept running. The light from the fire was becoming less strong.

I couldn't think, I couldn't stop running. I was very afraid, especially of fire. After running for long enought that I thought it was safe, something made me turn my head and look back. When I did. I could see the flickering light dance around the trees almost in a taunting way. The shadows doing just the same and drawing wavy and dark beams. I panted and stopped running. My frame turned and I lowered my head. Tears slid down my muzzle. The fire would spread through the Woodlands and destroy much of it. Why was this happening to me? I couldn't understand. I looked away from the light and there, just beside me I could see. Hidden behind a tree, another den, probably of another wolf. With a frown and a pain in my heart I knew, the fire would reach this place as well and take their home.

One paw lifted to try to step towards the den and see if there was another wolf there, so I could alert them and save their life. But I found myself stopping suddenly and remembering. I have ran... I ran! how many dens must have I ran past! I.. I couldn't let them die, I couldn't let... With the same fear in my heart I ran towards the fire. I ran at top speed. In my head, I could remember the wolves I lost. I couldn't let the same happen again. Please, don't be too late. Please.

Soon I got to my den again and I looked around, trying to find others' dens. I wasn't able to find others and with a last look towards the tree I saw it. The tree was hollow inside. It had no leaves, nothing. The fire was just on top of the tree, but it would reach the bottom and get the other trees as the bottom was bent inwards towards the forest... Perhaps.. It was the most crazy idea I had, but I had to try. With a deep breath I ran towards the tree and slammed my body against it. It didn't move or even do anything. I looked up. It was hot. I tried again. With another slam, the tree shook, but it wasn't enough. I took a step back. What do I do. The others! With a quick thought, I raised my head and howled calling for help. I howled as loud as I could, it echoed through the woodlands.

I had to do this. I had to face this, I had to stop this disaster from taking away innocents' homes. I ran back a few feet into the forest and howled again. Then I ran out of the forest and again I raised my muzzle and howled.

But I can't do this alone.
