Nakato
nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky |
The challenge had been answered and the battle won. Tick Tock had fought valiantly against the devil who refused to release her grip on the land. She won and sent the coward running for the hills. Her part was finished and now it was time for Nakato to take charge. The master healer, who had only mended the king this past spring, now waited outside the Monster’s den for her to return. The gathering of pack members had been large and eventually, the dark girl had been swallowed by the bodies. After a while, she had stepped back, grabbed her basket of herbs, and dragged them back to the den. There she waited in the dry space until the rain had finally stopped. The clouds still hung over head like an ominous curtain and the roar of distant thunder echoed faintly, but a sense of calm seemed to lay over the plains. Nakato sighed deeply, wincing only a little as the crisp air stung her lungs. Winter was coming soon and with it came the thought of pups. The ranks of Asteraia were growing steadily but it was still the young who held the future of the pack in their paws. The healer felt the familiar tug in her heart and the tingle in her body. She wanted nothing more than to experience the joy of motherhood, but she knew the unspoken rules of the pack. Even here, she had seen evidence of it. None but the alpha pair may carry child. It is their seed alone who will rule over the land. The healer knew the consequences and the thought of losing a cub was too much. An image flooded her mind suddenly and before she could stop it she had seen a glimpse of Tobias holding her child in his fangs, blood seeping around his muzzle. Choking back a frightened sob, the healer shook herself quickly to shoo the picture from her mind’s eye. This was neither the time nor the place for such thinking. Right now, she needed to devote her full attention to her wounded mistress. Slowly, she moved from under the protection of the den and sat under the cloudy sky. A freezing wind blew past her and brought with it Tick Tock’s scent. Nakato’s bob tail wiggled uselessly as she turned around to face the approaching leader. |
