Amber orbs peered after the doe, just disappearing back into the safe haven of the woods. Chasing it any further was pointless, but the young wolf felt the urge to continue anyways. The escape had left a small dent in his pride, but was quickly replaced with new found certainty to preform better. He perked up his frame, silently vowing to do better next time his chance came. Only when a light voice made its way to his ears, did he notice the scent filling the air.

"Hello," his ears perked up at the sound. His head following the curve of the bank before locking onto the owner of the lighthearted voice. Another wolf.

On reflex he tensed, surprised by the sudden appearance of female wolf calmly making her way towards him. Her coat seemed to be a patchwork of browns. The shades seemingly lightest around her neck and face. Her yellow eyes connected with his much darker amber as she continued on. "The deer outran you, I saw." Though the comment meant no harm, it still chipped into the male wolf. Had she seem him fail? The giggle following caught him off guard, but more so the comment after that. "You should be more careful with your meal choice, deer are cruel if you get them pinned."

He watched curiously as her eyes seemingly lit up as she sat a few paces away, coiling her tail around her leg. The male had recovered from the shock of her appearance, but still was at a loss of what to say. But at least it did seemed obvious that she wasn't conveying herself as a threat. Bringing a paw up to his face, the male brushed off snow that had irritated his snout. The fur there was slightly off, presenting several long scratches down his nose. The skin being damaged after he'd naively stuck his face into a badger hole.

Turning his body towards the female, he peered across at her. She sat there staring him down, waiting for an answer. Something about her posture amused him, and brought a small smile to his maw.

"Normally I wouldn't have, but today I was feeling optimistic." The male's voice was much deeper compared to hers, lacking the smoothness hers contained. Looking slightly at the bank he continued, "I would have had it too if I wasn't spotted so soon." He followed with a light containing hints of bitterness, before returning to rest his gaze on the smaller wolf. Locking eyes with the female he awaited her response.
