At Leisure Lake the sun is always shining and only a few stray clouds roam the open sky; paradise is the one word that really describes it. This beautiful lake is clean and refreshing, the very best place to swim and fish. Pups are known to play here while older wolves watch at the side, engaged in their own activities.

S E R A P H I N A

Wind whips through Sera’s thin pelt as she stands by the shore, the cold ocean air going right to her bones. She’d come here originally because of how lovely the ocean was, but she’d forgotten to take into account the approaching winter’s effect. Seraphina isn’t what one would call particularly envious - she’s happy as she is - but come colder season she won’t deny that she begrudges her mate his coat. Vladimir is made for this sort of weather; Sera is not. Sure, she’s much more content in the summer, but that’s only one season of four. Besides, it’s easier to cool down than heat up, in her opinion. You can always find shade or take a dip in the lake. What can she do other than insulate a den? But as much as the princess might complain, she’ll admit it gives her a good excuse to cuddle up with Vladimir under the guise of “sharing body heat.” Call her biased, but Sera would say that’s the best part of winter.

It doesn’t take long for Vlad to appear after she calls. In fact, he’s mere meters away. It’s Seraphina who notices him first, but he turns to face her only moments later an almost guilty look on his face, as though the princess has caught him red-handed. “I...um...hi my love.” A sapling falls from his mouth and Sera looks between him and tree with a bemused smile, tilting her head. It’s not incredibly common for vargs to eat plants, and if they do they certainly aren’t eating trees.

“Hello, darling.” Seraphina closes the gap between them and rubs her head against the underside of his in greeting. Though they’ve both grown since reaching adulthood, Vlad has much more than she. Perhaps having two litters at such a young age has stunted her, but Sera’s never been a very large wolf. Nor has any other in her family. It shouldn’t surprise her if most of her children outgrow her. Nonetheless, she doesn’t mind the height difference between the two of them in the least. It makes it easier to curl up with Vlad and to greet him like this. “What have you been up to today? Hunting trees?” Her head shakes in a teasing scold. “That’s hardly fair to the trees, Vladimir. They aren’t very tasty anyway.” Seraphina intertwines her tail with his. “On the other hand, I have caught a gull for us to eat, if you’d like to join me.” She drops his tail and heads back to her prey, looking over her shoulder with her bright emeralds at him. “Unless you’d prefer to eat the tree. But you can bring that over here if you want to eat it, I suppose. I’m still good company to eat trees with, right?” She smiles at him. “Obviously gull isn’t an ideal meal, but there’s not much else to catch on the beach. I’d try fishing or catching crabs, but it’s too cold to go in the water.” Sera pouts. She wouldn’t mind some crab right now. “But I worked with what I had, so I hope you don’t mind it.”

The princess waits until Vladimir takes the first bite to start eating herself. It’s much less a meal and more a snack, but food is food and Sera can’t complain about that. She can, and has, complained about the feathers. Today, however, she puts those complaints on the sidelines. Vladimir has heard them many times before and she doesn’t think he really cares to hear them again. “So what’s the sapling actually for? I don’t think you’re planning on eating it.” Perhaps he wishes to show it to the children? They’re still curious and Sera thinks they’d find it interesting. Or it’s something personal (she cannot imagine what, but Vlad is entitled to his privacy and she won’t pry). She listens for his answer and nods, satisfied with anything he says. It is, after all, just a sapling. It’s not exactly life changing. Though, speaking of life changing… “Ziva, Qiturah, and Asmund have gotten so big. It feels like so long ago that we were their age.” Sera laughs, because really it wasn’t all too long ago. She and Vlad have simply had a lot of life experience despite how young they are in the grand scheme of things. “They can’t be much younger than we were when I was pregnant with them. I know they’re capable on their own, but I can’t help wanting them to be children again.” It sounds so odd to say out loud. To Sera, their first litter are still babies, but compared to her own life it’s so strange. She and Vlad really were barely more than children themselves. But she likes to think that they’re stronger because of it. If they can take care of two litters before they enter adulthood, they can tackle anything that comes their way.
