somebody shine a light

Rowena

Elvira is absolutely off her rocker. The quiet filly that once meekly plodded along between her parents is now an inferno of rage because her mother swam one island over. This reaction is unbelievable. If Rowena had spoken to her mother the way Elvira speaks to her now, Circe would have laughed in her face. Rowena is tempted to do the same.

Is Elvira stupid? She expected Rowena to fight for her freedom and then waltz back in for a visit? Does she have any idea how the world works? To step foot into someone else's territory leaves you vulnerable to claim. If Rowena had attempted a visit she would be right back in Osiris' clutches from which she fought so hard to escape. How did Rowena expect Elvira to react? She expected Elvira to visit her, to ask for help if she needed it, not barge in, guns blazing without so much as a conversation to precede it.

How does Elvira expect Rowena to react? Should Rowena get the snot beat out of her, let herself be dragged back to Ridge, give up everything she's fought for, and then just carry on pretending everything is fine between them and they're all just one big happy family? Nonsense! This is going to be a huge wake up call for Elvira, but you reap what you sow.

Rowena's teeth sink into Elvira's shoulder, just as Elvira's teeth sink into her own. "You're eight years old, Elvira, and we weren't even living together under the same stallion. You weren't abandoned." She growls. Elvira is jealous and possessive, just like her father. She may think she has abandonment issues, but her issues stem from something else entirely, and Rowena will not put up with it. "You catch more flies with honey, my dear. Try asking nicely next time and you might find you get what you want, but not like this, you won't."

Does Elvira even know what she wants? Clearly she wants Rowena to come with her, but surely it's not to grandmother Elerona. Elvira never had any of her grandparents around. Most horses don't. It's not expected, nor customary in any way. Elvira hinted that she was unhappy with Bjorn and wanted out, but now she talks like she doesn't want to leave Bjorn. The poor girl is a confused mess, and Rowena blames herself. She blames herself for not cutting the cord sooner. This grown mare is acting like a lost and abandoned weanling, at eight years old. She's practically middle aged. Maybe if Elvira hadn't been living with her parents for so long, she would have developed a measure of independence by now, but what's done is done. Better to cut her off late than never.

Rowena surges forward, pulling up alongside Elvira. She and Elvira are hip-to-hip, facing opposite directions, when Rowena lets loose a swift kick towards her daughter's elbow.
