“if you’re gonna tell them everything
don’t leave out the good part”
it seemed, at least. At his polite words, Eadaz gave her sister a self-satisfied glance. Well mannered to – Sabran couldn’t complain, surely.
“Well, Sab?” Eadaz tilted her head at her elder sister, quietly gloating. Sabran returned it only by cutting her eyes at Eadaz briefly, before returning her attention to Akello.
“No, no, it’s fine, don’t worry,” she said, shaking her head. The words rushed together slightly with nervous clumsiness.
Eadaz nodded at her sister, satisfied, and flashed their new companion another grin, welcoming him to join them.
“So, Akello, where are you from?” she asked, leaping straight in with eager curiosity. “Those markings are so unusual – cool though! – do they run in the family?”
Sabran glanced between her sister and Akello, hoping she wouldn’t offend him with her forthrightness. She offered him a small, almost apologetic smile, hoping that it might both reassure him and herself.
