Despite the words that came from her lips, Canis wondered if his approach was not truly "okay" with the golden lady. The thought crossed his mind that she was simply being polite. It was likely true. His white ear trembled slightly with self-doubt. However, from the low volume of her voice, he thought maybe -- just maybe -- she was as nervous as he was.
The back of his mind reminded him then of what little he knew of the Commons: mares could be forcibly claimed here. Perhaps that was had the golden mare so wary. This -- and the thought that she might be a little nervous, too -- gave the young stallion enough courage to settle himself a little bit. His silvery tail swished casually against his hocks. Canis wanted to emulate calmness, stillness. She didn't have to trust him; Canis wouldn't demand that from a stranger, but he certainly didn't want her to fear him either.
She called herself Encelia and revealed that she, too, had just left home for the first time. His ears pricked forward with interest as the gold girl said she was from Salem, from the Badlands. Pale nostrils quivered with his excitement to have something in common with her. "I'm from there, too," he stated, the words tumbling from his white maw. "Well, from Salem anyway. I grew up in the Desert. I just left home a little while ago myself."
The thought of his mother and little sister spending the cold desert nights beneath the stars tugged at his heartstrings. Home. It wasn't a hospitable environment by anymeans, but there was beauty in the dunes and dry grass, the cactus flowers, and the way the sand changed as it neared the shoreline. His tone had softened a little by the time Canis spoke next, a glimpse of homesickness in his eyes. "How is it going for you so far?"
