gather medicine for heartache

incomplete without you

It was a difficult journey through the wind-tossed waves that broke over the white mare, sometimes burying her completely. Surfacing after yet another of these unceremonious dunkings, Silver's dark eyes swept the horizon to find the distant figure of her guide - but Dögun was gone. For a moment, fear froze her limbs, and she slipped beneath the surface again. But she was still a warrior at heart, and her hesitation did not last long. Buoying her spirits with a memory of the grullo stallion's smile, Silver's limbs struck back at the sea, and she continued to swim. In time, the old woman even learned to surrender herself to the waves, rather than struggling against them. To harness the sea's savage strength, and let it help carry her home.

And slowly, inexorably, the island of Tinuvel began to take shape. Growing from the small speck Dögun had first pointed out, to a looming land of tundras and mountains and forests that were still shrouded by a light dusting of snow. The waves would have slammed her into the unyielding wall of stone that rose up hundreds of feet into a sheer cliff, but Silver angled her body until she was abreast of them, and spent the remainder of her strength swimming towards a flat expanse of shoreline. It wasn't until she'd clambered up onto the rocky bank, tossing her head half-heartedly to remove the streaming curtain of her mane from her eyes, that she saw the small figure standing on the opposite end of the beach.

Her weariness forgotten, Silver flew across the short distance that separated them as if she had wings. Touching her muzzle to Dögun's forehead, a strangled sound that somehow managed to combine anguish and elation escaping her. It seemed an eternity before her numb lips were able to form the words that lingered impatiently on the tip of her tongue. "I never thanked you," she said softly, her throat from the saltwater she had swallowed and the threat of impending tears. "But I am more grateful to you than you could possibly know, Dögun. For the home and happiness you have given me." Her eyes briefly explored the Inlet, but they returned to rest on his face as she continued.

"And for showing me that it was time to stop living in the pain of my past. I don't know what my future holds, but I am fortunate to have a friend like you at my side as I face it."
