Hickere liked the Forest. She liked the soft crunch of frozen snow beneath her hooves and the deep green of the pine needles that brushed her hide as she walked through trees which were closely grown together. She liked what family she had met here – even if they’d been mare’s of Lyden’s and not Braylen’s. Over time her curious inquisition won her the knowledge that Braylen had two mares aside from her, one being a new recruit and the other having been here before Hickere ever arrived. Curious, the grullo filly became. That morning, free from her duty of watching Dock, she stepped away from her sisters as they grazed and informed them that she would be seeking out Isobel, the first mare that Braylen had.
Leaving Dickere and Dock to scrounge around for something to graze on, Hickere stepped through the forest. Her eyes were bright with life, a smile of wonder on her mouth. The way the ice froze over the world almost gave it a magical property. Everywhere the sun hit, spikes of light shimmered and danced. It was all so very beautiful…
Eventually, Hickere found her. Or, at least, who she thought to be her. Stopping at the edge of the clearing she’d come across she smiled at the mare she was standing near, the smile growing as the seconds ticked by. “Hello!” She said her breath a soft cloud of air in the space between them. “I’m Hickere, one of Braylen’s mares. Are you…” she imagined it would be utterly embarrassing if she was mistaken, “are you Isobel? I wanted to meet you…” Though, of course, that didn’t mean that Isobel had wanted to meet Hickere.
