The dawn sun hung low and bright in an already clear and blue sky, casting long shadows across a rugged, open landscape. It was colder here, but not unbearably so - it was as if her bones had been made for these temperatures. In her swollen belly, the parasite kicked its assent. She had followed the pony king here that fateful night, fearful and desperate to put as much distance between herself and her half-brother as possible. The resulting guilt and paranoia that he would somehow track her here had kept the dappled mare sheltered away in a secret hiding place for weeks upon weeks. In that time, the worst that had happened to her was the realization that she was pregnant, and that there was no question of whose it was. Yet no Vitalij came for her, and Dogun had made no demands of her. Now, as she crept from her hiding place and looked out at the herd members scattered across the open expanse of the inlet, she realized that the pony king had been right after all: she was safe here. And they were not a herd of midgets, as she had imagined. With slow steps of her large, feathered hooves, Asha brushed past a patch of a heather and made her way towards the loose congregation of horses. Better to make friends now and worry about her condition later. |
