It was lonely in the Inlet. The other inhabitants, if there were any, were quiet and Persephone passed most of her time alone. It was not the isolation of her sentence that troubled her, however, but the absence from her own home.

Was everything okay in the Forest? How was Talya doing now she had a little one in tow and her mother nearby? Aurora and Freya too, with their children? What if something had happened to any of the women under her care? She wouldn’t know until it was too late.

The thought was maddening.

Persephone had to distract herself somehow. She wasn’t sure whether Warsaw would be angry about her leaving the Inlet, even just across the border for a few minutes, but she was past caring. Besides, it was unlikely he would notice before she returned.

Mariael was so close by, she needed to speak with her now before she returned to Luthien. So Persephone crossed the border – from the inland, this time. She didn’t go far, keeping one ear behind her for signs of Warsaw seeking her out, and let out a call for her ally, somewhat muted but loud enough for anyone nearby to hear her.
