Ain't life just awful strange

a new world hangs outside the window
beautiful and strange
it must be I've fallen awake
I must be

Wasp was confused by the boy's causal nature. He stood kind of foolishly in the distance, his muscles seemingly hanging limply from his bones as he stared back at her blankly. She wanted to shout, "what the hell is wrong with you?" but thought better of it, and kept her lips tightly shut. Instead, she kept pawing, sending damp earth and pebbles to spray out against her back legs. The dark mare's boxy head jut high over her withers when the stallion finally moved, taking a few careful steps toward her. She snorted at him and barred her teeth again in warning. When he finally spoke, one dark ear lobe flicked forward and then back again.

She half scoffed, half snorted, at his sheepish reply. "Yeah, not before I hurt you!" She shot back at him with a firey flick of her thick, black tail. This stallion was so curious to her. She couldn't figure out what he wanted or what he was doing. And for all Wasp knew, he was just trying to play a trick on her. "Whatever you're doing, I'm not falling for it." She spat again. Her amber eyes narrowing as she studied him.

"Are you the one who chased off Liland?" She called out next, her nostrils flaring as she attempted to catch his scent from this distance. There were so many in the air - remnants from Liland and his family, but also some of this stranger, and maybe even another stallion. Wasp felt vulnerable here. She didn't know the lay of the land well, nor did she understand the politics that governed the island. If the stallion she was looking at now wasn't the only one around, perhaps she'd be plunging into the sea and heading off to a new island much sooner than she anticipated.
