bring me back to life... Requiem

It felt like a dream. She just wasn't sure if it was a good one or a bad one. Rugar hadn't been a bad stallion, per say. But he had scared her when he came rushing in to claim her in the Common and she couldn't get the image out of her head. He had looked too similar to He who must not be named with his lips curled back and his ears flat to his head. In color, they looked nothing alike. In fact, Ruger might be taller, but Evanescence shook the dark thoughts from her head. She wouldn't think of that stallion, not ever again. He was the one who left her a scarred empty shell of who she used to be. He was the one who made her so fearful of stallions, of being abused. Ruger was giving her a tour of the Prairie when a challenge rang out and she had been surprised to recognize the voice.

It was the other stallion she'd come across in the meadow. He had been much less confident then, though, almost as awkward at talking as she was. But he didn't look that at all as he met Ruger in battle. But over her? She didn't get it. She was no grand prize. Surely they would want a whole mare, not a broken one. In the end, the other stallion was victorious. Requiem, wasn't it? She tried to remember the name he gave her. She trembled as he called out to her, telling her to meet him in the inlet. Her ears flicked back and forth uncertainly. So, he wasn't just going to drive her there? She hesitantly stepped toward the water, looking back at Ruger, almost in shame. She didn't know whether to apologize for having to leave him or what. What do you do in this situation? Maybe most mares would just be grateful but she wasn't sure that was all she was feeling.

She felt almost torn. She didn't believe Ruger to be a bad stallion. In fact, she felt that maybe he was trying to be kind to her before the fight. So maybe that was why she felt bad about having to leave with someone else. But at least it wasn't a stranger. She hesitated once more as if to make sure no one would follow her or try to block her escape before she took a deep breath and plunged into the water. It was getting cooler as the temperatures dropped and she knew that meant breeding season was upon them. She shivered at what that might mean. Would Requiem want a foal as compensation? She snorted, pushing away the dark thoughts. She had only been pregnant once before, but it didn't make it. The stallion whose name she would forget if it was the last thing she did kicked her too hard and she ended up having a stillborn.

She remembered a rush of anger when it happened, knowing what he'd done. But what could she do? She had failed her son. He would have been a beautiful colt, but he was too pure for the world she was going to bring him into. It wasn't too long after that, she decided she had to get away from her abuser. Her heart had been broken for good when she saw her dead son lying at her hooves. She couldn't go through that again. As she met the shores of the Inlet, another shiver ran down her spine. She snorted and shook away the water before looking around. The place was kind of pretty, but how would she find Requiem? Would he find her instead? She hesitated before moving further onto the island. She was afraid to call out, not even sure if she wanted him to find her.
