Live through this lie

Was I left behind?
Tell me, tell me I survived.

I had no intention of venturing further into Liland's terrain after I issued my call. But the cold kept grasping at me, creeping up my legs and spine, threatening to fill my chest. So with a great snort, I keep moving. Luckily, the fjord stallion appears in just a few minutes.

I nicker to the cream-colored stud as he approaches. Based on what Larka had shared, I anticipated seeing him in worse condition. Her silver coat had been shaggy and unkempt. Her hips jutted out at the sides of her body, and her flanks looked sunken in. Liland didn't seem quite so far off, even if his demeanor had changed. Something about the look in his eye suggested he was tired, battered even. Liland looked as if he'd had a rough go of it lately.

I bob my head proudly as the stallion greets me. "Congratulations on your return to the Bay." I say somewhat cheerily. The stallion had always been intent on returning to his home, and he'd made good on that promise. Even if he cost him. "It must feel good to be home again." I offer, my honey brown eyes watching his reaction carefully.

I didn't want to beat around the bush. Too much was happening around the islands lately. "I'm sorry to be short with you Liland, but I'm here on business." I say bluntly. "I'm sure you've heard the rumblings of war. I'm afraid the threat is real. Rougaru and Warsaw are up to something, and the rest of us should be prepared."

My damp tail hangs idly between my legs, and I shift my weight carefully in the cold temperatures.

"I need to know I can count on you Liland, when the time comes." I finally say. "I don't know much of your troubles, but it's clear from the look on your face that you've experienced some. In order to protect our families, we can't be distracted."

Larka's name is on the tip of my tongue, but I can't bring myself to tell him about our recent encounters. Not yet, anyway. So instead I study the stallion hard, as I look down my nose at him, and wait to see if he's truly capable of proving his worth when the time comes.
