Once upon a time ago, he had been successful.
It would be a stretch to say that he had experienced love, but he had experienced other feelings, and he had done rather well for himself. He had learned of love, loss, family and he had friends. They were all gone, vanished from the earth without a trace.
Of course, the old adage says that he knows nothing.
Sighurd, once small and pink, had been his shining glory- the last of his kind to follow him into the sea, and the last one to look up to him and call him father. Yet now she strikes out on her own, a small bud gone to flower and living on her own, with the capable skills bestowed upon her by her father, and with stories to fuel her dreams, lest she have nightmares.
In the cold of the meadow, with the sunlight waking up in the distance and painting the sky a soft orange-purple, Vercingetorix remembers faces and places that were once familiar. Waking, he shivers against the cold, and shaking, he wrestles the ache of sleeping on his feet from his knees. First a careful stomp, brushing the snow off his skin, and then with a full body twist and shake, he is awake. Sleep had been easy, and he is still profoundly distrurbed by this. He remembers little of the punch of his father’s kicks and the stab of his father’s teeth.
Somewhere on his body, there is a small, pulsating throb, as his flesh remembers the violence of a man long dead.
Twisting his neck to one side, and then the other, he turns towards the sunrise, eyeing the way the purple of the sky bleeds into the oranges of the newborn sun, and he feels awfully and terribly alone.
