daylight, i dream of you softly

Soft on the ground - the barest whisper upon the grass - are hoof steps. Yet Ylva does not hear them above the roar of the waterfall nearby, and neither does she see their owner’s approach, for her eyes are squeezed tight to ward against the tears that threaten to fall. Grief, anger, and frustration batter at her like tidal waves, spilling up out of her throat in choking, half-stifled sobs.

Her pale grey nostrils are fluttering and flaring until a masculine voice snaps her eyes open, freezing the breath in her chest. Her head spins toward the stallion, but there’s a moment in which he is only a silver blur as she blinks away the tears that have collected in her eyes.

Years of dread and nightmares coalesce in an instant, and for one heart-stricken moment Ylva can do nothing more but look up at Warsaw, her watery brown eyes wide with horror. “I wonder,” he says, “if I still look like the monster now.”

Ylva’s ears twist back atop her head, burying themselves in her messy cream-and-rust mane. Her legs itch to stand and take her far away from him, but her heavy belly and weak knees prevent no hasty movement, and so she makes no such attempt. As her shock melts away, the horror in her eyes changes to something darker and harder, and her mouth straightens in a firm line. A short, tense silence passes in which she examines him, looking for any trace of the monster she remembered, but she can see only a weary stallion much older than her, his silver coat criss-crossed with more scars than she remembered. Despite the callousness of his words, there is nothing threatening in his bearing. In fact, he seems almost bored, as if she were a somewhat-unusual rock he had come to gander at.

It’s then she finally processes what he had said, and her gut turns cold. Had word of Liland’s fall already spread across the islands?

With her breath trembling in her breast, Ylva forces her tongue to form the only words in her brain. “You know?” Her voice comes out as a croak, barely audible above the thunder of the falls.
